Planning a winter trip to Chios? Check your travel arrangements before booking. The island’s airport runway will close from the evening of 15 November 2026 until 15 March 2027, interrupting regular passenger flights for four months.

Greece’s civil aviation service announced the dates on 15 October. The closure is needed for the next stages of work to extend the runway and improve the airport’s infrastructure.

What’s being done?

The runway is being extended northwards to a total length of 1,799 meters, allowing the airport to handle larger aircraft.

For now, flights are continuing with turboprop aircraft and fewer passenger seats while the first phase of construction takes place. The next stages require the runway to close.

There’s hope of an earlier finish

The contractor will try to complete the work by 28 February 2027, but that is not a confirmed reopening date.

Until an update says otherwise, 15 March remains the end of the announced closure period. Keep this date in mind when making plans.

Already booked a flight?

Start by checking your reservation with the airline or travel agent. Find out what arrangements they are offering before changing accommodation or booking another way to reach the island.

Ferries will be an alternative, though winter timetables need a closer look. If your journey involves an onward flight, leave some breathing room between the two: bad weather can disrupt sailings.

What about emergency access?

Helicopters will still be able to use the airport apron for urgent flights, including medical transfers, search and rescue, firefighting and humanitarian operations.

That provision is particularly important for residents who may need emergency transport while regular flights are suspended.

A difficult winter for residents

Local organizations have raised concerns about the closure and its effect on businesses, family visits and everyday travel to the mainland.

According to Euronews, local representatives are challenging the timing and asking for talks with the government. The shutdown covers Christmas and New Year, raising concerns for people planning to travel home for the holidays.

Chios will still be reachable by sea. But whether you’re visiting family or planning a quiet winter stay, getting there will take more thought – and probably more time – than usual.
